Course Description
The Pain Interprofessional Curriculum Design workshop is a unique interactive opportunity for academic faculty and teams to understand and explore the essential strategies and components in the design, implementation, evaluation and sustainability of an interprofessional pain curriculum for health professional students. The course faculty includes both education and pain specialists who are experienced faculty from the health sciences at the University of Toronto with deep expertise in interprofessional education and the development of pain curricula. While the focus will be on pre-licensure pain curricula, this workshop will be relevant to those involved in Continuing Professional Education or other interprofessional initiatives.

This course is sponsored by the University of Toronto Centre for the Study of Pain, in association with the Centre for Interprofessional Education, and is based on the success of its Interfaculty Pain Curriculum.

Course Goal
To provide an opportunity to explore the strategies and components in the design of a pain interprofessional curriculum for health professionals within the context of one’s own institution.

Course Objectives
Participants in the PICD Workshop will explore strategies related to:

  • Applying interprofessional education principles in developing pain curricula
  • Engaging interfaculty stakeholders to support pain curricula
  • Developing resources essential to support curriculum design
  • Integrating core pain assessment and management competencies in curricula
  • Designing pain-based cases for interprofessional learning
  • Facilitating small group case-based learning
  • Evaluating student assessment and program outcomes
  • Implementing and sustaining an educational innovation
