Pressure Injuries and Complex Surgical Wounds: An Advanced Practice Course
February 23-24, 2018

Course Description
Based on the latest standards of care, this course will focus on the diagnosis and treatment of pressure injuries and surgical wounds. Nurse Practitioners, Advanced Practice Nurses, and Registered Nurses working with clients at risk or who have pressure injuries will learn advanced technical skills in wound management as well as gain an understanding of the latest technologies in wound healing.

Participants will have the opportunity to apply learning through simulated laboratory sessions pressure redistribution, wound debridement, skin biopsies, suturing and dressing selection. Best practice guidelines and current Health Quality Ontario wound care standards will be embedded throughout the course.

Learning Objectives
By the end of this course, the learner will be able to:
1. Identify the pathophysiology and risk factors for pressure injuries and surgical wound complications.
2. Select appropriate interventions/devices to implement a pressure redistribution plan.
3. Identify categories of dressing technologies with indications for use.
4. Recognize persons at risk for malnutrition.
5. Perform basic suturing, a skin biopsy, and wound debridement.
