Course Description
The National Institute on Nursing Informatics is a unique educational opportunity for nurses interested in learning more about advances in Canadian nursing and health informatics. The two day onsite institute will focus on key issues and challenges related to informatics in practice, administration, research and education.

Prior to the institute onsite immersion, attendees will be provided with access to a series of short (15-20 minutes) preparatory webinars to be viewed at their own pace and convenience as well as recommended readings. Webinar content will focus on informatics foundations to prepare registrants for the onsite program. These sessions will focus on the evolution of informatics, clinical data standards, entry-to-practice informatics competencies for nurses, and core concepts related to information and communication technology in healthcare.

Onsite, attendees will be provided with a recap of the webinar key learnings and an opportunity to discuss the preparatory materials in more detail. Over the course of the Institute, attendees will hear from a variety of faculty and practitioners from the field and participate in a number of interactive sessions focused on a range of informatics topics of particular interest to nurses. The speakers bringing their perspectives, expertise and experiential challenges to bear on the institute discussions will include individuals with expertise in the areas of:

* health information system evaluation and implications for nursing
* human factors and systems design
* consumer informatics
* privacy and the management of personal health information
* the use of social media in nursing
* organizational change management
* telemedicine and telehomecare
* primary and secondary uses of health and nursing information

Audience
The program will be of particular interest to nurses and other health professionals currently working in informatics but also to leaders/managers and practitioners in all practice settings who wish to broaden their knowledge and understanding of health informatics. In addition, nurse educators who are responsible for the integration of informatics into nursing curricula and those considering a future career in informatics will benefit from this Institute.

Throughout the two day institute, participants will have the opportunity to interact and network with other attendees. Attendees will receive a Certificate of Completion from the Centre for Professional Development, Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto.
