Course Description
Pain as a prevalent and universal symptom has major impact on individuals of all ages, their family and society. This course will focus on contemporary chronic pain assessment and management practices and related diagnostic reasoning and management based on theoretical models, best evidence and current treatment guidelines.The institute will have broad applicability for practitioners of all disciplines working in a variety of practice settings and with diverse populations. Participants will learn from leading pain experts about current pain practices and strategies for improving patient assessment, care and clinical outcomes. Specific approaches and procedures will be discussed for patients with acute and/or chronic pain; pain management and addiction.

Program Objectives
By the end of this institute, participants should be able to:
1. Understand the neurophysiology and related pathology for specific pain assessment and management approaches.
2. Appreciate the perspective and experience of individuals experiencing pain.
3. Identify focused assessment approaches for patients of varying ages, with complex co-morbidities, and experiencing acute and/or persistent pain.
4. Describe pain management strategies for acute and/or persistent pain for patients including pharmacology, procedural analgesia, self-management, physical and psychological approaches.
5. Identify the relevant guidelines, standards and/or policies currently in use for treatments and/or procedures.
