April 2 – June 10, 2018

Course Description
This 10 week self-directed online course is essential for health care professionals working in acute care, long-term care & community interested in enhancing their knowledge and skill in the application of best practices for ostomy and peristomal skin care. This comprehensive course will assist you to critically analyze complex ostomy care problems and apply unique management techniques required to provide quality care and support to people and families who are living with ostomies. The course will be taught by nursing faculty with expertise in enterostomal therapy.

Weekly topics include: Anatomy and physiology, conditions related to ostomy, current surgical procedures, assessment and care, product selection, nutritional and pharmaceutical considerations, and psychological and social aspects of living with an ostomy. New content has been added to include Pediatric considerations for ostomy care and management.

Course workload depends on prior knowledge in ostomy care. It is estimated that up to 8 hours of study per week is required for successful completion of each weekly quiz. The online modules that are supported by electronic textbook readings, video presentations with voice narration, downloadable study guides, website resource links, and independent learning activities to assist participants in their studies. Participants can progress through the course at their own pace, however the modules must be completed in order and there are 3 short assignments with specific due dates. There are no required synchronized sessions but participants will have opportunities to interact with each other and their faculty through online discussions. Faculty will monitor participant progress and may “check in” if you are not active in the course for a prolonged period of time.
Learning Objectives

Upon successful completion of this program participants will be able to:
1. Apply evidence-based knowledge and skill in current ostomy care and management.
2. Demonstrate assessment and problem-solving skills related to managing ostomy complications.
3. Formulate plans of care that support the patient and family toward ostomy self–care.
4. Engage an inter-professional approach to maximize ostomy care independence.
5. Demonstrate leadership in ostomy management in your place of employment.

This course has been designed to provide a comprehensive, evidence-based education experience for Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses, and other health care professionals, in all health care settings who are interested in advancing their basic knowledge and skill competency in ostomy care and management.
